Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) set off today for South Carolina and Louisiana, where she will campaign for Senator Barack Obama (D-Il), Senator Mary Landrieu (D-La) and house members in South Carolina and Louisiana.
"I hope we are going to see a wave that will sweep Obama, new House and Senate members into Washington", Norton said. "Anything I can do that will increase the House and Senate majority will benefit the District more than any other jurdiction in the United States."
Norton has traveled for Obama and raised money to expand the congressional majority for next session when she will be trying to bring closure to her Voting Rights Bill and more Home Rule to the District. Norton's Voting Rights Act of 2007 passed the House and got 57% of the Senate but needed 60% in that body. Landrieu voted for D.C. Voting Rights and Norton believes the bill will have the 60% votes it needs in 2009.
Washington, DC - As Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton heads for Denver tomorrow afternoon, she said today, "The choice of Sen. Joe Biden as Sen. Barack Obama's running mate is the right pick for the country and gives the Democrats a ticket with the best of both worlds." Norton explained, "The country is hungry for fresh eyes and change at the top of the ticket, but in time of war, there could not be a better pick for vice president than a man who has spent 35 years immersed in foreign and military affairs. The chair of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee rounds out the ticket with the right balance."
Norton said that in choosing Biden, Obama showed that he has "the judgment and character to do what the country needs, and adds to the confidence that he will respond similarly in office." She said, "Senator Biden was certainly not a political choice. Joe brings the same three electoral votes to the ticket as D.C. Instead of going for a swing state or electoral advantage, Barack opted for the policy advantage."
Norton, who is vice chair of the Democratic Platform Committee will speak on Tuesday evening on D.C. voting rights at the convention.

Denver, CO - Michelle blew the roof off the Pepsi Center – soft and strong at the same time, which is hard to do, but she did it! I would be surprised if Michelle didn’t boost bump Barack up a few points in the polls with that speech, which was just what the campaign needed.
Watch for my speech coming here an hour before I speak at the convention
